Who's Your Mother?
Maybe you’ve heard the phrase, “Who’s your daddy?” It’s slang, often used as a boast to show dominance or superiority over someone else. The false teachers in Galatia took pride in claiming Abraham as their spiritual father. They also insisted that Gentile Christians belong to Abraham and follow the laws and regulations of the Old Testament. But Paul asks a different question, “Who’s your mother?” The Judaizers seem to have forgotten that Abraham had children by two different wives: Hagar, a slave woman, and Sarah, a free woman. Hagar’s descendants were born into slavery, while Sarah’s children were born into freedom. Hagar’s offspring were tasked with keeping the law. Through Sarah, God eventually brought about the birth of Jesus, the One who saves us by His grace. So, who is your spiritual mother? Hagar or Sarah? That’s the question Paul answers in Galatians 4:21-31.
