Sermon: “Jehovah Nissi” from Joseph Wasson

Joseph Wasson - August 9, 2026

Jehovah Nissi

We have been learning that the names by which God has chosen to reveal Himself in Scripture reveal aspects of His character. This week's name is Jehovah Nissi—the LORD is my banner. What can we learn about God from that? Join us as we explore the significance of the name Jehovah Nissi and what it tells us about our God and our relationship with Him.

Scripture References: Exodus 17:8-16

From Series: "Hallowed Be Thy Names"

Shakespeare famously asked, “What’s in a name?” Modern culture often answers, “Not much.” Scripture, however, gives a very different answer. In the Old Testament, naming a child was much more than picking a pretty word. A name signified the essence, character, or nature of a person. The same is true of God. Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through more than one hundred names and descriptive titles. Each name unveils something of His character, His power, and His faithfulness, often emerging in moments when His people needed Him most. Throughout the rest of the summer, we'll explore eight of these names, discovering how each one helps us know God more deeply and respond to Him with greater love, trust, and reverence.
