Sermon: “The Guidance of the Spirit” from Dan Mitchum

Dan Mitchum - October 27, 2024

The Guidance of the Spirit

Trail magazine is one of the world’s most widely distributed outdoor magazines. The February 2004 issue provided directions for climbers descending Britain's highest peak, Ben Nevis. Returning from the 4,409-foot summit in bad weather requires explicit instruction, and the article gave step-by-step directions on getting down safely. There was only one problem. The directions were wrong. Roger Wild, the mountain safety adviser for the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, discovered the mistake and immediately contacted the magazine. He warned, “Anyone following a bearing of 281 degrees from anywhere close to the summit cairn or shelter will be taken directly over the north face.” Anyone stepping off the north face would fall 1,000 feet to death. The magazine admitted that a crucial step in the instructions was inadvertently omitted. We’ll examine some ways the Holy Spirit guides us. While He sometimes leads us along difficult and challenging paths, we are always safe in His presence. His guidance is always trustworthy. Join us as we learn to follow the many ways the Holy Spirit leads us.

From Series: "The Holy Spirit"

Many Christians throughout the ages have struggled to understand the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Our attention often focuses on God the Father and Christ the Son. But as the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is also deserving of our praise, worship, and obedience. Our prayer for this new sermon series is that we won’t just gain a biblical understanding of the Spirit—we also want to experience Him in a fresh way. Throughout this eleven-week series, we’ll explore the person and power of the Spirit, His role as our sanctifier and teacher, the fruit and gifts of the Spirit, what it means to grieve and quench the Spirit, how to keep in step with Him, and more. Please join us for this life-changing series.
