Sometimes in life, we discover just how much we need God. Sometimes it happens when the doctor calls. Sometimes it happens when a marriage begins to crumble, when a child wanders away, when grief comes calling, or when a dream we prayed about for years suddenly falls apart. There are times when our hearts are wounded even when our bodies are healthy. In times like these, we can find ourselves asking, “God, where are You? Can You heal this?” The good news of Scripture is that God does not stand far from our suffering. And as He draws near, we hear Him declare, “I am Jehovah Rapha—I am your healer.”

Shakespeare famously asked, “What’s in a name?” Modern culture often answers, “Not much.” Scripture, however, gives a very different answer. In the Old Testament, naming a child was much more than picking a pretty word. A name signified the essence, character, or nature of a person. The same is true of God. Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through more than one hundred names and descriptive titles. Each name unveils something of His character, His power, and His faithfulness, often emerging in moments when His people needed Him most. Throughout the rest of the summer, we'll explore eight of these names, discovering how each one helps us know God more deeply and respond to Him with greater love, trust, and reverence.
